Katherine Gwaltney, M.A.
Licensed Professional Counselor
I have limited availability to accept new clients.
Everyone deserves the experience of having a compassionate, empathetic space in which to be heard and understood without judgment. I believe in the therapeutic value of the corrective emotional experience and strive to support clients with accessing an affirming, client-centered, and strengths-based presence in counseling. The prospect of being vulnerable and making changes in one’s life is often accompanied by feelings of uncertainty and even fear. I endeavor to create an environment that feels safe and supportive of the healing, growth, and change my clients are seeking.
As a counselor, I bring my education in life stage human development and psychosocial adaptation, as well as my interest in psychodynamic, family systems, humanistic, and existential theories to the process of joining with clients to identify emotions and contextualize experiences in ways that are affirming and empowering to each individual. I often incorporate CBT and MBCT techniques with skills for assertive communication and interpersonal effectiveness. Having worked in a variety of settings serving clients from diverse backgrounds and age ranges, I have experience providing support to individuals and families through many of life's transitions, obstacles, and circumstances. I've had clinical roles in various mental health settings, including college counseling services and community mental health programs operating from school-based, home-based, and outpatient models. I have experience working with adolescents, adults, and families to address concerns stemming from trauma, substance use, serious mental illness, mood and anxiety disorders, relational issues, adjustment and life stage transitions, grief, and other presenting issues.
My approach involves meeting each person where they are and being curious about the story within each person's emotional experience and self-concept. I listen to understand and reflect the experiences you have had and to discover the underlying message of how this has shaped who you are and what you believe about yourself and others. I will ask questions and check in about the unfolding dynamics of the process. I focus on looking for and highlighting each client's innate capacities for developing effective, authentic coping and communication skills to promote overall health and resilience.
Payment Methods: I accept Anthem/BCBS, Aetna, Oscar, Oxford, and United Healthcare insurances. I also accept self-pay clients.
